Lessons From the Happy Land

To create meaningful change, a new constructed theology is needed—one that derives its authority from natural sources rather than supernatural ones.

As we approach Juneteenth, let us celebrate the local story of how newly freed enslaved people founded a new kingdom here in Western North Carolina after the Civil War. We will also mourn all the ways Black Americans have been severed from the land and how these connections can be reclaimed.
