CJP activities are underway. We held a book study on June 10 for Justice on Earth: People of Faith Working at the Intersections of Race, Class, and the Environment. The book focuses on the environmental crisis – revealing ways that capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression intersect with and contribute to ecological devastation. This focus could not be more relevant to these troubled times. We had 9 Zoom participants at this first event and hope to offer more.
The CJP proposal included text about Election 2020: “This is an immediate threshold issue – to elect representatives at the local, state and national level who espouse UU values and take action to register voters, assist with obtaining ID’s, provide transportation for the above and to the polls; campaign, circulate/sign petitions & letters; make calls; send donations, attend fundraisers”.
To do this effectively, we must build alliances. We are working closely with the UU Justice Ministry of North Carolina (UUJMNC) and their non-partisan partners (You Can Vote, Democracy NC, and Reclaim Our Vote). We had 30 volunteers for our nearly 1500 postcards to purged voters! We now have 15 volunteers to make census reminder calls.
We continue developing our alliance with the local NAACP chapter:
With the death of George Floyd and subsequent reactions around the country and the world, many of us are looking for a way to advance justice for Black Americans.
We may feel vulnerable participating in demonstrations, but there is a simple way to show our support in Hendersonville – by joining the NAACP at https://www.naacp.org/become-a-member/. Twenty of you joined during our membership drive at UUFH earlier this Spring. For $30 you can send a message of support to our local Black community. When you do, please send a brief email to Judy Bonner HERE.
