GREEN SANCTUARY CORNER
The Green Sanctuary Congregational Project is an endeavor of the Social Justice/Environment Justice Team and members of UUFH.
Each month the team will share helpful information with the congregation through the Green Sanctuary Corner.
Remember when our parents yelled at us, “Turn those lights out!” Back then it was because it negatively affected their electric bill. Now, we realize this is also one way we as individuals can reduce our carbon footprint.
Most electricity continues to be generated by coal or gas power plants. While people view gas power plants to be cleaner and therefore greener, that is not necessarily the case. Natural gas is a clean way of saying methane. When methane combusts it produces carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide and methane are the two leading causes of our changing and ever more freaky climate. Just think Hurricane Helene.
The experts are coming into agreement, though not all the data is in, that Helene was stronger and carried more water (flooding) because the Gulf of Mexico’s waters are hotter than they have ever been in the past. In fact, all the oceans, seas and gulfs were hotter. This affects the ocean currents that drive the jet stream that determines how far south the Polar Vortex dips. It’s part of the interconnectedness of all things.
So my dear friends, listen to your parents and TURN OFF THE LIGHTS! It doesn’t cost you anything and actually WILL save you money.
