President’s Message – June 2021

How quickly things change!
With COVID vaccines now widely available to those in the U.S., many measures we’ve all been careful to take over the last year are winding down, steadily. We will soon return to in-person services – won’t that be wonderful! – and, like other UU congregations, are working to balance the changing guidance from health authorities with a re-entry pace that gives people time to adjust, and to see how others are managing elsewhere. As Rabbi Rachel Jackson noted in her recent service, different people will feel differently about how quickly to move forward.

This is my last message as Board President, and I will be brief.
First and foremost, I thank the members of the Board for their collaboration and service, with true dedication and commitment. All have worked very hard to help UUFH weather a difficult year, and to move forward with grace. It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve with them all.

Finally, I’ll end with a quote, attributed to Pierre Teihard de Chardin; it offers a powerful way forward – now and always. I found it in a letter to the Editor of the Transylvania Times, submitted last October by UU Minister (retired) Ernie Mills:

“Some day after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire.”

Will we boldly go where the best have gone before?  Thank you all.

Michael Yates,

President, UUFH
