President’s Message – Mike Yates – July 2020

This is a time of challenges, great and small. We continue in the throes of a
terrible pandemic, affecting our lives in so many ways – but each day we also see great compassion and generosity. Systemic racism and injustice continue to undermine the foundations of our democracy, and the lives and dreams of millions. But we are also witness to millions of people, of all races, creeds, and cultures, now rising up to say “enough!” We hold the deepest hope for real change: profound, transformational, and with all deliberate speed. There must be true justice for all.

Here, too, we feel these challenges, in different ways. COVID-19 has hit hard at the way we worship, and local businesses and institutions face unprecedented financial challenges. Reduced incomes can require tough choices, and we are not immune. In an interim period with our Ministry, there is much more work to be done. And while Zoom is wonderful, there is nothing like a hug to remind us that we are loved. The Board will reach out virtually for your thoughts and ideas, but how great it would be to discuss, in person, our way forward! For example, how might we turn the challenge of continuing injustice into an opportunity to do even more, each of us contributing (as in the parable of Stone Soup) in different ways?

We know UUs throughout history have shown great courage in the face of
adversity. Guided by our values, grounded in our faith, and embraced by our shared community and Covenant, we can move forward robustly in this troubled and most wonderful world.
