JUUSTICE FORUM series
The Forum series meets on the 4th Monday of each month, 1-2:30pm. via ZOOM. Per recent meetings, the forum is being repurposed as a broad Social Justice Forum and will be called the JUUSTICE Forum. Topics for discussion will be announced in advance. Contact (e-mail) Judy Bonner to register and obtain the Zoom Link.
Our April 25 forum topic is a book discussion with Helen Bishop: “Nice White Ladies: The Truth about White Supremacy, Our Role in It, and How We Can Help Dismantle It “(2021), by Jessie Daniels, published by Seal Press.
In Helen’s words,
“What a wonderful title. It tells me that if I read this book, I’ll be thinking about what white supremacy really is, as opposed to what I’ve been told about it. I’ll be thinking about what my role is, and about what I might be to do that will help get rid of it, if all goes well. I might be able to do something about what I’m pretty sure my family’s part in it is. The table of contents tells me Jessie Daniels doesn’t agree with some things I keep hearing about, like the wellness industry. I don’t think this industry will lead us to productive things to do. That’s what I want: things to do. I read books from back to front, so I find out pretty quickly that Daniels has some practical suggestions for us: take an inventory; divest from white spaces; acknowledge and repair harm; rethink kinship; change your mindset; learn how and when to call in other white women; find a spiritual practice that supports the work of dismantling white supremacy. And a few others.
Just what I want to discuss – hope you do too. Let’s do it on April 25, 1:00 – 2:30 pm. The book is available at Highland Books in Brevard, Malaprop’s in Asheville, or as an e-book from a number of sources. Hope you’ll read it and join us!”
