“Carl Sandburg and Social Justice”

Dr. John W. Quinley, guest speaker

In a 1908 letter to Carl Sandburg, his soon-to-be wife, Lilian “Paula” Steichen, wrote: “Do tell me how you contrive to be a moral philosopher and a political agitator at one and the same time…artist, poet-prophet, on the one hand; man of action, on the other.” Sandburg took these words to heart and addressed the pivotal events of his time through his art. The UU Fellowship presentation will share highlights from his eclectic life’s work. It will focus on Sandburg’s social justice messages rooted in the core American value of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all peoples.

Dr. John W. Quinley, a retired college administrator and faculty member, was raised in Maywood, Illinois—just a few blocks away from where Sandburg lived 30 years earlier. He served as a docent for Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site for several years, and is the author of Discovering Carl Sandburg: The Eclectic Life of an American Icon. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Hendersonville, North Carolina—just a few miles from Sandburg’s former home.
