“Singing for Our Lives”

Singing helps us reclaim embodied spirituality, soothing our spirits, and forging community ties. Join us for a celebration of singing as a spiritual practice, featuring guest guitarist Anne Coombs.

June Theme – Spiritual Practice

Speaker: Rev. George Grimm-Howell

Rev. George Grimm-Howell joined UUFH in August 2024 as its settled minister. George graduated from the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2022 and recently served the UU Church of Columbia, MO and the UU Fellowship of Jefferson City, MO. He was ordained in St. Louis, MO, in June 2024.

George puts his energy primarily into efforts for building and sustaining a multigenerational, multicultural beloved community that centers love, justice, and healing. George frequently incorporates socially transformative art forms into the worship experience and seeks to create opportunities for encounter and dialogue in the Hendersonville community and beyond.

Musician:

Anne Coombs is a long time veteran of the Asheville area music scene, both as a performer and a teacher. It was that passion & experience that led her to start The Asheville Music School in 1996. At that time it was the first community music school in Asheville.

In 2008 she decided to try out what she called Guitar Jam Summer Camps to supplement her income during the summer. The first two were held at UNCA with great success. The third year she moved her camps to a warehouse at River Ridge Shopping Center.  This time it included all instruments, vocalists and a steadily growing number of campers.

In fall of 2009 Anne decided to take her popular summer camps to a year round program and called it Rock Academy. Since it’s inception Rock Academy has come to host two Saturday Children’s classes, a Wednesday evening Adult class, and a soon-to-happen Teen class.

In March 2010 Anne took on yet another venture, a second school location. The Music Academy Asheville, which just happens to be neighbors with Rock Academy, as a matter of fact a hallway connects them. It’s from this location Anne oversees both RA and AMSW.

Now, that she’s created this musical environment, how does she make it available to all children who want it? In 2011, Anne’s final dream came to life. Thanks to Anne and our current board members who have worked painstakingly over the last year, our new non-profit Give to the Music was born.

We gather for worship and fellowship each Sunday with a service at 10:30 followed by coffee hour. Dress is casual. Parking is plentiful. And our building is accessible.

Family Ministry / Sunday School: All Ages meet in Sanctuary at 10:30 AM Children go to classrooms at 10:45 after the “Story for All Ages.” On the lower level, we have a nursery for infants and toddlers, and we have classes where children and youth learn about and explore faith, religion, justice, and community.

We welcome you: your whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes. Join us on this extraordinary adventure of faith!
