Theme: Liberation
Peace is not a natural human state, it is a human construct – and so is war. On this Memorial Day Sunday Rev. Lisa Romantum Schwartz will explore themes of war and peace, love and loss. Fellowship members and friends who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces will be acknowledged, and there will be an opportunity to lift up the names of our dearly departed loved ones
SPEAKER
Rev. Lisa Romantum Schwartz

I celebrate the ways our human paths have continued to intersect in profound ways during the past few years of the global pandemic. Wise congregations build a culture of belonging in this brave new hybrid world, because humanity gets farther when we travel together, whether we gather in-person or remotely. I believe congregations have a once-in-a-generation chance to revisit some of our norms and patterns that don’t serve us as well as they used to, and I’m excited to be in ministry during this era.
I’m passionate about Unitarian Universalism and its creative potential to be on the leading edge of this personal and social transformation. I’ve experienced it, I’ve witnessed it, and I’ve participated in it. Today, with society hurting from many ills, I know that Unitarian Universalism can be a powerful source of healing and hope as we help bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice.
I’ve retired from full-time ministry, glad to have a stalwart new generation to whom I can entrust the holy work of our faith. I’m available for occasional pulpit supply, regionally or remotely, and some consultancy.

Musicians:
UUFH Choir, Janey Ryan; Director, Shirley Gruenhut, accompanist

She found her haven on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains of WNC in the fall of 2023! Janey Ryan grew up in the Church of Christ and it is there where she grew to love singing. after getting a degree in Music Education, Janey taught for almost 30 years in the field of ~ you guessed it ~ music education. Choral music was her specialty & her super-power (one of them) was teaching middle school-aged kids. While she taught, she sang and acted professionally on the side. In 2012, Janey founded and was the Artistic Director for SoCo Women’s Chorus in Austin, Texas. She directed them until she retired in 2020.

Shirley is an avid chamber music player and New York native who now calls Hendersonville home. A graduate of Brooklyn College, she was the first time recipient of the prestigious Charles Ives Award for excellence in musical performance. She studied graduate level piano accompaniment at the Manhattan School of Music. She assisted at the Metropolitan Opera House studios and has performed regularly in New York, as well as Europe and Israel. Shirley is a member of ACMA-Association of Classical Musicians and Artists, Sing For Hope, and ACMP-Association of Chamber Music Players. She is also a professional member of AAPF, the Asheville Area Piano Forum. She was founder of several chamber music ensembles
