In the September 2018 issue of The Atlantic, its editors reported out results of “The Big Question” they had asked a couple of months earlier on Twitter: “What book or article would you make required reading for everyone on Earth?” Tao te Ching was the fourth most-popular text of the responses, after Fahrenheit 451, Silent Spring, and The Brothers Karamazov.
Marc Mullinax has spent the last two years translating Tao te Ching from Chinese. What has he learned about this counter-cultural, misfit-making text that teaches non-competitiveness, non-meddling, and peace through knowing one is already enough? Does a 2,500-year-old text written in China have anything to say to today’s world and its ways? You bet!!
Marc Mullinax is Professor of Religion at Mars Hill University, and a frequent visiting professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. He teaches and learns about the academic study of religion in both regions. His courses include Religions in Appalachia, Hinduism & Buddhism, Angels & Demons: A History of the Religious Imagination, Religions in America, and Living World Religions in Seoul. He remains a joyful Baptist, even though he has considered all the facts!
