In the context of a nation in which its elected leader has sparked scorn and violence against many groups of people — immigrants, pregnant women and girls, sexual and gender minorities, black and brown and other people of color, differently-abled people, and the earth itself — how do members of these groups and our allies work our way through the hate to participate in the healing and liberation of our communities — and our nation — in this historical moment?
Speaker: Dr. Carter Heyward
Carter Heyward, born in Charlotte in 1945, spent much of her childhood in Hendersonville. She attended Randolph- Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg VA (1963-67), Union Theological Seminary in New York City (1967-70 and 78-80); and Columbia University (1971-72). She was a Danforth Fellow (1978-80) and later was awarded Outstanding Alum Awards at both Randolph-Macon and Union Seminary. Carter was one of the “Philadelphia Eleven,” the first Episcopal women to be ordained priests prior to the church’s authorization of women’s ordination (1974), and she was Professor of Theology at the Episcopal Divinity School for 30 years (1975-2005). Along with several other women, she retired to the Brevard area in early 2000s, where she founded Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding. Carter served on Free Rein’s Board for 20 years and taught riding for 15 years. She was also among the founders of the Transylvania County chapter of the NAACP (2013) where she continues to be active on the Religious Affairs Committee. Author of 18 books, her most recent is The Seven Deadly Sins of White Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action (2022).

Anita Robertson, piano
Anita is an accomplished accompanist and solo pianist. She was an elementary school music teacher for many years and currently teaches at a local music studio. Anita has advanced degrees in music, as well as a master of divinity degree.
We gather for worship and fellowship each Sunday with a service at 10:30 followed by coffee hour. Dress is casual. Parking is plentiful. And our building is accessible.
Family Ministry / Sunday School: All Ages meet in Sanctuary at 10:30 AM Children go to classrooms at 10:45 after the “Story for All Ages.” On the lower level, we have a nursery for infants and toddlers, and we have classes where children and youth learn about and explore faith, religion, justice, and community.
