PROCEEDS from our recent “Grow Out Own” Outreach Collection

Your generous contributions in June totaled $1305.72.

Funds raised go toward scholarships for minority Henderson County students who will return with their degrees to work in our public schools.  Teachers and counselors who “look like us” are especially valuable for minority students.

Follow Up “Grow Our Own” Outreach Collection

In response to a “how else can we help” question from Jan Partin, Larry Winecoff, the fund representative who spoke at UUFH in support of the scholarship fund “Grow Our Own”, forwarded this reply from Peggy Marshall, Executive Director, Henderson County Education Foundation:

“Besides helping fund scholarships, they could serve as mentors for students in our Teaching as a Profession (TaaP) classes.  We also have a new program called Marable’s Mentors at Hendersonville Middle School that is equipping black youth to be mentors of other black youths within their school.  There would be opportunities to volunteer or serve as mentors in this program as well.  There could be opportunities in both programs to serve as guest speakers.”

If you wish to go beyond funding to share your experience and talents as a teacher or mentor, please contact Jan Partin.
