SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM (SJT) MEETING

The Social Justice team is a self-selecting group open to all UUFH Members and Friends. We welcome all active participants. Whether your social justice interests are one or many, you can contribute to our SJT efforts. Please contact Charlotte Corrigan for the Zoom link if you plan to attend this meeting.

We meet the first Tuesday of each month from 12-1:30pm via Zoom.

All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis Edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katherine K. Wilkinson Available from the publisher and Amazon ” A powerful read that fills one with, dare I say . . . hope?”—The New York Times” The book is an anthology of short chapters so it’s easy to browse and read chapters of special interest to you.
We will hold four discussions on the book. The first will be at noon February 11:

CONGREGATIONAL READ DISCUSSION SESSIONS
The Congregational Read is All We Can Save; it’s about climate change and
climate justice. We will cover it incrementally over 4 sessions led by members of
the Green Sanctuary.
The first discussion will be held February 11th at 12 pm in the sanctuary after
Coffee Hour. Each discussion will last 30-45 minutes. The subsequent
discussions will be held February 25th, March 10th and March 24th at the same time.
The first discussion will cover section 1.0 Root of the book. This section is 45
pages from page 3 to page 48 and contains 6 essays and 2 poems. Those interested in participating are requested to read this section. While reading this section hold in mind these questions:
- What are you learning that you did not know before?
- How are you feeling as you read?
- What passages resonate within you?
- Is the depth and breadth of the climate problem less than or greater than
you thought?
Bring your answers to the discussion.

2023-2024 OUTREACH COLLECTIONS
February: DREAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND
As we have each year since its origins here at UUFH more than a dozen years ago, we dedicate our Outreach Collection to DREAM SCHOLARSHIPS during the month of February.
These college scholarships – up to $2500 per year – have now helped well over 50 undocumented students brought to the US as children. These DACA recipients are now young adults seeking to improve their lives and those of their family members through higher education and employment.
Our guest on Sunday, February 4, is Evelyn G. She migrated to the US from Mexico as her family fled local corruption and sought a better, safer life. She has recently completed her degree in accounting – in part with aid from the Dream Scholarship Fund – and works as an accountant at Blue Ridge Health. Evelyn will share more of her story at the February 4 service.
If you would like your offering to go to this program, please write Dream Scholarship in the memo line of your check. Or, if you are giving cash, please use an envelope (provided in the Foyer), write your name on it, and mark it “Dream Scholarship.”

FRIDAY ACTION HOUR
Every Friday at 11:00 UUs from across the state gather to recap the past week and take action on the issues impacting our state and country. In the coming month, we’ll be focusing on the upcoming municipal elections and will also keep the pressure on our elected officials to better promote the HOPE program. And we always have good music to help us feel the justice movement in our bones!

NC Primary Election DATE: MARCH 5, 2024!
Each of us has power. In a recent blog post from former US Attorney Joyce Vance, she noted the following: “A decision not to vote will have as much force in determining the outcome of the 2024 election as much as voting in it will.” She followed that up with this comment: “Think your vote doesn’t matter? It definitely does in small local elections where turnout is small. Decisions about who your mayor or sheriff is will definitely impact your life. But voting matters in national elections too. Remember Florida in 2000? George Bush got 2,912,790 votes, 48.8% of the total. Al Gore received 2,912,253, also 8.8% of the vote. The fate of the nation hung on fewer than 1,000 votes [actually 537]. Remind anyone who tells you they’re going to sit out the 2024 election of that fact.”
Legislation passed in 2023 has led to changes in election rules for 2024 (court cases are underway challenging some of these laws.

FEED the KIDS COALITION FUNDRAISER
St James Episcopal Church is holding it’s second FatTuesday Fundraiser on FEBRUARY 13 (FAT TUESDAY) for Feed the Kids. The dinner is an enhanced version of the spaghetti dinner that the Saint James FTK Team serves at the Boys and Girls Club. There will be beads, decorations, music, and more for all ages. Suggested donation is $10/person or $25/family. Additional donations are welcome. Pay at the door or register online.
