UUJMNC:  OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION

Action(s) of the Week

from Rev. Lisa Garcia-Sampson, Executive Director Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry of NC

The For the People Act is the most comprehensive federal voting rights bill in a generation.  The Bill has already passed in the House and the Senate may vote on it soon!  We need a flood of NC UUs to call Senator Burr this week (202-224-3154) and tell him to Vote YES on the For the People Act.  Click here for talking points.

This Thursday, a group of UUs from across the state will be talking to Senator Burr’s staff in support of the For the People Act with our friends from UUSJ and Faithful Democracy.  If we can get a flood of phone calls from NC UUs this coming week, that would make our message even more powerful.

Other news/actions:

Update on Duke Energy’s 15-year plan. There has been an outpouring of concern for this plan which fails to prioritize clean energy.  So much so that the virtual public hearing scheduled for last week was delayed because so many people signed up to testify.  In the coming weeks, we’ll figure out how to continue to take action.  Here’s an article with more background info.

Join the Poor People’s Campaign every Monday at 3:00  during the first 100 days of Biden’s Presidency.  Each week’s National Moral Monday virtual event focuses on one of the movement’s 14 Policy Priorities to Heal the Nation.  Watch the Livestream here.

FRIDAY ACTION HOUR

Join UU Forward Together every Friday at 11:00am for Friday Action Hour. Gather in community to recap the week and take action on issues impacting our state and country. Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/91029655107

Migrant Worker Gift Bags

“If you ate today, thank a migrant worker.”
Soon many migrant workers will arrive here in Henderson County. They will be coming in trucks and vans, weary from previous work and the long trip, carrying their possessions in a plastic bag. At this point, receiving a small gift with a welcome card showing they are not looked upon with contempt or dismissed is enough to put a smile on their weary faces.

UPDATE:

The donation drop off sites are; (1) the UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP of HENDERSONVILLE– the bin is on the UUFH Office porch at 409 Patterson Street right across from the church;  (2) the HEARTWOOD REFUGE on Oceola Road which is right off Willow — the collection boxes are on the porch in front of the blue fountain; and (3) there will be a drive by collection at the FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH on the corner of 5th and White Pine on APRIL 12 from Noon  to 2pm. Dropoff your donations at the site most convenient for you.

Current needs: Air mattresses – about 100 more are needed; the Ozark Trail Brand for about $8 each (Walmart.com) are preferred. We have 100 ordered but need at least 100 more. These air mattresses seem to hold air better than some that are much more expensive. Twin fitted sheets to cover the mattresses.  We can use gently used sheets both flat and fitted (twin size but a very few can use double bed sheets).
Clothing (men’s only); Men’s pants small to medium (28 to 32 waist and about 30” inseams).  Men’s long sleeve men’s shirts (small and medium) Ball caps.

For anyone willing to make cards to go in the gift bags, we needl 200:  about 4×5 inches with drawings or collage and Spanish texts “Bienvenido” AND “Gracias por su trabajo duro.” (Welcome. Thank you for your hard work.).  Sign cards with only your first name.
