New Outreach Collection – “GROW OUR OWN”
Larry Winecoff will join the UUFH service on January 16 to promote the UUFH Outreach Collection in support of the Grow our Own scholarships.
What is GROW OUR OWN?: A Program to Grow our own Teachers of Color
Why support this cause?: 36% of our students are of color, 7% of teachers and administrators are of color.
Students need teachers who look like them, can better relate to them and who serve as excellent role models. Research is very clear: students who have teachers who reflect their ethnicity do better in school, are more likely to graduate from high school, are more likely to continue their education, and are more likely to become contributing members of their community.
One solution: Provide scholarships to promising local students of color who would commit to teaching in Henderson County for at least three years after they graduate and become certified teachers. This is an investment in our local community to make our educational system even better than it already is and to provide an opportunity for all students to reach their potential.

MORE Opportunities for Action
Per UPDATES from Rev. Lisa Garcia-Sampson, Executive Director, UU Justice NC:
— The NC superior Court panel this week upheld the constitutionality of our existing voting district maps; appeals to the state Supreme Court are expected.
If the North Carolina Supreme Court upholds the current maps, Republicans will very likely control the state legislature for the next decade and help tip the balance in the U.S. House toward Republicans, even in elections where Democrats win upward of 55% of the statewide vote.
— We’re seeing a push this week to reform the Senate filibuster to pass voting rights legislation.
Those rule reforms would allow passage of critically important voting rights legislation with a simple majority: the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Our Senators need to hear of your support for these bills this week.

CLIMATE JUSTICE CONGREGATIONAL PROJECT
Having received UUFH approval to continue with this vital project, we can now move forward with some on-hold activities and seek new opportunities for congregational education and action, including use of UUA/& UU Justice NC resources, and continuing UUtheVote advocacy, with a focus on fair redistricting and voter rights.
We’ll add a new emphasis on the 8th principle per a separate congregational vote held at our Annual Meeting.
The 8th Principle states: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
For more information about the 8th Principle, see 8thprincipleuu.org/background. This UUA site is organized by responses to these key questions:
what is the origin?
why now?
why single out racism?
what is beloved community”
what does it mean to be accountable?
The more that we work together, the greater impact we have.
