Bill Reese started with Big Brothers/Big Sisters in 1972 and has had matches with a Little Brother on and off ever since. His first match crossed racial lines at an interesting point in time. Allan is now an independent software consultant to electrical generation plants in the Philadelphia area. The relationship meant enough to Allan that in 1990, he looked Bill up to let him know how Bill had impacted his life. As Bill says “such a small act and having such an impact, that is why I keep coming back to BB’s.”
Bill’s current little brother is Caleb who has been matched to Bill since last June. Caleb sees the world differently and Bill enjoys seeing things from his perspective. They do activities every other week that they mutually agree upon. Bill says “we are friends and we respect each other for who we are.” Recently they went to the Hendersonville Symphony together, one of Caleb’s favorite things to do.
Bill says “a common misconception of the program is that the adult is somehow more of a mentor. While that can be part of it, it is really about just showing up. Having someone take an interest and spend time with a younger person, not because that are paid to do it, but because they are just interested in them as a unique kid. That is the real core of the program.”
Bill and Caleb are very lucky to have found each other! Please reach out to Bill for more information on this wonderful organization!
