UUs in Action: Donating Blood

In 1958, Ron Partin’s younger brother was 10 years old and the youngest child to undergo open heart surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. At that time, live transfusion was used as a means to give blood to a patient and Ron remembers local unions bussing folks to the Cleveland Clinic to give blood to Ron’s brother. This left a mark on young Ron’s mind. He would never forget the unselfishness of these folks and it inspired him, many years later, to give blood.
Ron started donating blood about 15 years ago and to date has given 12 gallons of blood. Ron donates “whole blood” which is the most flexible type of donation. It can be transfused in its original form or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma and platelets. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days and it takes about an hour to donate one unit.  Ron’s O negative blood type makes him a universal donor and extremely popular at blood banks!

Thanks to Ron for all he does for our community!
