Disability and Me

As a television producer, UUFH congregant John Owens covered the passage of the “American with Disabilities Act” (ADA) in 1990. Little did he know at the time how important the legislation would mean to him personally. John reflects on the importance of the ADA on its 30th anniversary, and how it has improved the lives for millions of disabled people.

John Owens and wife Sara Hassinger have been members of UUFH since 2017 after moving here from Michigan. John worked for twenty years at the NBC television station in Detroit as a producer-editor, then another 15 years in corporate communications. In 2005, John Owens was shot and nearly killed while entering the lobby of the TV station, and has a spinal cord injury as a result of his wounds.
