Job Opening: CHOIR DIRECTOR

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville is seeking a Choir Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Choir Director (CD) is employed by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville (UUFH) and works under the supervision of the Minister (or delegate).  

The CD has overall accountability for the UUFH choir music program and works in consultation with the Minister, Choir Piano Accompanist, Choir, Music Committee, and Worship Associates Team.  The CD works to develop and sustain a well-rounded quality choir music program for Sunday Worship Services and special festival services as needed.  The CD’s highest priorities are the quality of the choir music program and the themes and celebrations throughout the year, while being mindful of the interests and suggestions of the congregation. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee role of Choir Piano Accompanist. 
  • Plan and prepare choir music to fit with the theme of the sermon as determined by the Minister and Guest Speakers. 
  • Organize and lead weekly choir rehearsals starting Friday, September 6, 2024. 
  • Lead choir performances twice a month for a 10-month period (September 15, 2024 – June 22, 2025). 
  • Bring a spirit of collaboration to music selection and planning, soliciting from and staying open to Choir input. All final music decisions rest with the CD. 
  • Attend Music Committee meetings and utilize the assistance of the committee in any of the music functions as appropriate. 
  • Ensure that guest musicians are booked by the Music Committee for Sundays when the Choir is not performing.
  • Oversee condition, maintenance, and professional tuning of UUFH piano.
  • In coordination with the Office Manager, ensure that music selected for worship is compliant with licensing and copyright agreements (necessary to livestream services).

  • Choral directing skills; diverse musical knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate; good communication skills 
  • Clear understanding and support of the UUFH vision and mission
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Keyboard skills preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A musical degree is preferred

COMPENSATION

UUFH will compensate the CD $120 per choir rehearsal and $150 per Choir Sunday, to be paid monthly on the 25th of each month based on submitted timesheets. In addition, UUFH will compensate the CD at the rate of $22 an hour, up to two hours per week, for administrative tasks associated with the role, including attending Music Committee meetings, email correspondence to the choir and piano accompanist, and other tasks.
