SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM (SJT) MEETING

The Social Justice team is a self-selecting group open to all UUFH Members and Friends. We welcome all active participants. Whether your social justice interests are one or many, you can contribute to our SJT efforts. Please contact Charlotte Corrigan for the Zoom link if you plan to attend this meeting.

CONGREGATIONAL READ DISCUSSION SESSIONS
Our second of 4 planned discussions sessions will be led by Charlotte Corrigan on February 25. Jan Partin will be the lead on March 10, and Laura Early on March 25 – all at noon in the Sanctuary (after you’ve enjoyed your cup of tea or coffee).

This week, we learn from leaders who are calling for change — change made possible by doing our homework, raising our voices, and linking our arms.
QUESTIONS for our discussion:
- 1. How do you want to be of use in the climate movement/for a life-giving future?
- 2. How does climate impact your civic/political participation?
- 3. What insights in this section challenge your thinking about what we need to or can do?
- 4. What do you see that’s working to foster more, deeper democracy?

2023-2024 OUTREACH COLLECTIONS
February: DREAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND
As we have each year since its origins here at UUFH more than a dozen years ago, we dedicate our Outreach Collection to DREAM SCHOLARSHIPS during the month of February.
These college scholarships – up to $2500 per year – have now helped well over 50 undocumented students brought to the US as children. These DACA recipients are now young adults seeking to improve their lives and those of their family members through higher education and employment.
Our guest on Sunday, February 4, is Evelyn G. She migrated to the US from Mexico as her family fled local corruption and sought a better, safer life. She has recently completed her degree in accounting – in part with aid from the Dream Scholarship Fund – and works as an accountant at Blue Ridge Health. Evelyn will share more of her story at the February 4 service.
If you would like your offering to go to this program, please write Dream Scholarship in the memo line of your check. Or, if you are giving cash, please use an envelope (provided in the Foyer), write your name on it, and mark it “Dream Scholarship.”

FRIDAY ACTION HOUR
Every Friday at 11:00 UUs from across the state gather to recap the past week and take action on the issues impacting our state and country. In the coming month, we’ll be focusing on the upcoming municipal elections and will also keep the pressure on our elected officials to better promote the HOPE program. And we always have good music to help us feel the justice movement in our bones!

NC Primary Election DATE: MARCH 5, 2024!
Each of us has power. In a recent blog post from former US Attorney Joyce Vance, she noted the following: “A decision not to vote will have as much force in determining the outcome of the 2024 election as much as voting in it will.” She followed that up with this comment: “Think your vote doesn’t matter? It definitely does in small local elections where turnout is small. Decisions about who your mayor or sheriff is will definitely impact your life. But voting matters in national elections too. Remember Florida in 2000? George Bush got 2,912,790 votes, 48.8% of the total. Al Gore received 2,912,253, also 8.8% of the vote. The fate of the nation hung on fewer than 1,000 votes [actually 537]. Remind anyone who tells you they’re going to sit out the 2024 election of that fact.”

This is a critical election year. We can make a difference! When you go downstairs for coffee hour after service, please note if there is a table out near the Social Action Bulletin board. If so, please visit for pertinent voting and election advocacy as well as other social justice action issues which need our attention. Thank you.
Legislation passed in 2023 has led to changes in election rules for 2024 (court cases are underway challenging some of these laws.
