All members and friends are welcome to join the efforts of the Social Justice Outreach Team.  We currently meet via Zoom on the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm.  Contact Charlotte Corrigan for access link to participate or observe.

Dream Scholarship Graduate

Barbara Yates, our SJOT representative on the Dream Scholarship Committee, reports on a recipient who graduated Summa Cum Laude from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Technology in the Spring of 2020.

Here is a thank you message, he recently sent to the Dream Scholarship Committee:

“Also a huge thank you to you and the Dream Scholarship Committee for supporting me in school. I am very grateful to you all for all for your willingness to help me consistently throughout these last few years. This scholarship made it possible for me to receive an education and break the cycle of poverty that many immigrants unfortunately face. The Dream Scholarship Committee has accepted me into a warm community which has motivated me to not only do well in school, but to also love my neighbor. I truly hope that I can use my education to help someone in the future, as I was helped by the committee. I am truly honored to have received this scholarship.”

UUFH is a founding congregation of the DREAM Scholarships. This fall the committee awarded 8 scholarships to undocumented youth.  UUFH raises funds though our annual Dream Outreach Collection; other congregations, organizations and individuals in Henderson County also contribute towards the Dream Scholarship fund.

Just a brief reminder about Social Justice and upcoming Sunday Services:

On Sunday, September 13, Michael Yates will present a program “UU Principles, Environmental Justice, and Deforestation”.  This is linked to the Climate Justice Congregational Project and will be quite informative.

On Sunday, September 20, SJOT, during the Sunday service, SJOT will conduct our Outreach Collection for Creation Care Alliance.  This was originally planned for May and is the first of 4 collections planned for the year.  Donations may be made through your UUFH website account or by check mailed to UUFH through October 18.
