Gobsmacked!

Marc Mullinax returns to UUFH on June 21 to speak about an overlooked way to cope with the stresses of life. Too often life becomes ritualized banality … “same old, same old.” And every day seems like the previous one. Life seems to be slipping away into a tiring spiral of futility.

So, if you are both tired and tired of being tired, What now? Practice being Gobsmacked! (Definition: the action of clapping your hand over your mouth when you are utterly surprised to the extent that you are unable to speak.) Practice Awe and Wonder. Much of life gives us the slip until/unless we become aware of its utter miraculous and gobsmacking nature. We are wonderfully made … walking, talking miracles … nothing ordinary about us, or life. So, let us make the pilgrimage to remember who we are, and integrate natural gobsmacking rituals which, Marc believes, will tell us what it is that we are to do next.

Marc Mullinax is Professor of Religion at Mars Hill University. His courses include “Religions in Appalachia,” “Hinduism & Buddhism,” “Angels & Demons: A History of the Religious Imagination,” and “Religions in America.” His book, Tao te Ching: Power for the Peaceful, will be published later this year or early next year by Fortress Press. During this time of quarantine, he walks more and takes more pictures, which he posts to Instagram @marcmullinax. Marc remains a joyful Baptist, even though he has considered all the facts!

Until we feel that it is appropriate and prudent for us to hold our worship services in our sanctuary, we are recording our services for viewing via our YouTube channel . We make every effort to make the service available by Saturday afternoon. We encourage you to get to know us via these worship services. And, we hope to see you live and in person in the future!
