“The ABC OF RELIGION”

One of the most profound and challenging descriptions of religion I’ve read came from a theologian who lived 1800 years ago. It was the first serious writing we were assigned way back in the M.A. program in 1979-80. It challenges fundamentalists, atheists, and everyone in between. When I became a Fellow in the Jesus Seminar in 1992, I was convinced that Jesus would have endorsed this. The theologian, a colorful man named Origen, called the ABC levels of religion the Body, Soul, and Spirit. See what you think.

Davidson’s life has been most unusual. He has been a musician, combat photographer in Vietnam, photography studio owner in Ann Arbor, carpenter, and woodworker. . He says he feel blessed to have done his M.A. in “Methods of studying religion” and Ph.D. in theology, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, and Wittgenstein’s “language philosophy” at the University of Chicago between 1979-1986. After 23 years of Unitarian ministry, he retired in 2009. He has been a fellow in the Jesus Seminar since 1992 and an active presenter and author in the International Big History Association since 2014. He wrote a chapter on “The nature of humans, science, and religion” for the 2022 book Science, Religion, and Deep Time. He presently resides in Asheville, NC.
