Musings from the Music Mouse

Georg Philipp Telemann is one of my favorite Baroque musicians, so I was delighted when, one February Sunday, Katherine Price, our Music Director, announced during the service that she and her sister Mattie would be playing a work by Telemann. He was a prolific Baroque composer who wrote myriads of pieces for the instruments in use in the 18th century, as well as for vocal groups such as choirs and choruses. He expanded the forms in use, added new ways of using voices and instruments, and honored every occasion celebrated in Lutheran churches and in the areas called “Germany” at that time. He joined other Baroque composers, such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, in expanding classical music. He composed with a distinctive style, and his music continues to provide enjoyment today. The Fellowship’s music programs include the work of the choir, instrumentalists like Katherine and Mattie, and the Concert series, which brings in performers and works ranging from swing bands to country and western.
