Social Justice Outreach News

SJOT Update:

All members and friends are welcome to join the efforts of the Social Justice Outreach Team.  We currently meet via Zoom on the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm.  Contact Charlotte Corrigan for access link to participate or observe.

SJOT Retreat:

The Social Justice Outreach Team met on August 5 to define our focus for 2020-2021.  Covid-19 restrictions notwithstanding, we will continue our justice actions with your help.

The Climate Justice Congregational Project will continue through the year with an immediate focus on Vote 2020 issues.  Additional focus areas will include Black Lives Matter and racism, immigrant and minority outreach, housing, and youth hunger.

Get out the vote efforts:

Why is voting our immediate priority you may ask when there are so many pressing needs?  The UU focus on the 2020 election is aimed at electing officials who share our values; our commitment to democracy translates as representation by all of us not just the powerful and special interests.

Fifty members and friends of UUFH have signed on to participate in our postcard campaigns through UUJMNC’s UU the Vote project with Reclaim our Vote.  Our total is 4500 cards of the 25000 cards generated by UU congregations across North Carolina.  The focus is now shifting to phone and text banking through UUJMNC’s partnership with You Can Vote.  If you want to join the team, contact Kitten Bulen for more information.

Now is the time to check your registration – easily done online through a variety of portals including youcanvote.org/voter-guide.  Now is also the time to complete and submit your absentee ballot request.  Absentee ballots will be mailed in just a few weeks.  You can send them back by mail or deliver yours in person to any early voting site in your county.
